Getting back of gifts during break up is it reasonable?

When you are in a relationship you can not avoid to give something to your love one it is one way of showing our love to them not necessarily the material thing itself but the thoughts and efforts while doing so but i hear some stories that once the relationship didnt work out and they broke up would you just return those things she/he gave you or would you wait for her/him to get it back to you..in my own opinion i think it is not necessary at all it is a gift and once given to you its already your belongings and you are the one responsible how to dispose it even if the person who gave it ask about getting if back from you..how about you what is your thought about this matter?

I do have ex boyfriends who gave me gifts before that includes watches, gold necklace and a cellphone. But they not insisted to get what they have given me. Im so lucky with them and im still friends with them untill now.
