The median per person income in the USA for 2021 was $37,522, That’s about a million pesos (929,000 PHP)
Many Filipinos would gasp, “so much money…”
However, a single person in America can barely cover expenses—though that is unfathomable to a Filipino—how could that be possible, they might ask.
In America health insurance often costs 20,000PHP a month, double or triple for a family. (It is NOT optional--you must have insurance) My house is nothing special, I’m not wealthy but my taxes per year are about 424,000PHP. My water bill is not a lot, a mere 64,000PHP but my heating oil bill (it’s not optional—no heat and very simply, you die) runs about 318,000 PHP.
The harsh reality for many in America is summed up in this article:
57% of Americans can’t afford a $1,000 emergency expense, says new report.

($1000 is about two weeks income for most)
Remember, unless you live in an inner/large city you MUST have at least one car. There are no tuktuks or even busses for most of America, and cars are expensive.
Let’s look at what Americans save: “The personal savings rate (personal savings as a percentage of disposable personal income) was 4.1%.” (1)
Often, I’ll ask a Filipina, “If we were a couple, how much should we give the family?” Often the answer is 50%.
Now, think for a moment: If the average person saves only 4.1% how could they possibly remit home 50%?
It’s really easy to say that if there’s love, then money is no big deal, yet for most couples it is a big deal, both in the Phils and in America.
This is an interesting point of view:
DOES A MAN HAVE TO SUPPORT HIS FILIPINAS FAMILY? Loyalty To Her Family / Utang Na Loob
From my experience often it is not the Filipina that expects endless peso, it’s the family.
Long ago, I suggested that my then Filipina girlfriend let me hire a dentist in Tubigon and to take all the kids, nieces and nephews for cleaning and urethane tooth coating. I even found the dentist and she was more than willing. Well, the money instead went to something far more important: A OceanJet ferry ride from Tubigon to Cebu and back (1760PHP per child). That was years past and I’ll bet that two dozen teeth have been extracted that wouldn’t if the money was more wisely spent.
I’ll admit though that what I consider important, is not necessarily what other in the Phils consider important.
I did cringe once when a Papa told his daughter, “I need 100,000PHP for a rice paddy tiller.” And the dutiful daughter, obediently started to transfer the 100,000. Except that I knew the model, the place in Cebu that sold them, and also knew that delivered, the total cost was not 100,000 it was 55,000. It was bought, delivered, for 55,000 by payment to the manufacturer who delivered it.
There needs to be a balance and a wise couple, if they work together can find that balance.
