In 1574 CE the Chinese Warlord Limahong decided to take the Manila Bay. Even though he had over 3,000 men, it was not to be, and the Spanish won the day. Had things been different Manila, perhaps all of the Philippines would now be part of China. It is clear that the Chinese pirates and the Spanish appreciated the harbor. Then and now the Manila Bay is one of the world’s greatest harbors. Until recently, it was one of the world’s filthiest harbors.
A decade ago, Manila Bay was home to hundreds of thousands of informal residents. About 233,000 households had no connection to sewers. Thus, every day, the waste products of these households went directly into the Bay. The stench, people said was far, far worse than an open sewer.
The Supreme Court of the Philippines issued a mandamus way back in 2008, ordering the clean-up of Manila Bay. It took Rodrigo Duterte to actually do it.
It cost 28 million pesos to transport the dolomite (crushed sand/pebbles) from Cebu and many argued that it could have provided 189,000 sacks of rice. Yes, one out of every 10 persons in Manila would have received their sack of rice—and today it would be long gone, and today the harbor looks radically different and it should stay that way forever.
Before the clean-up:

There was a lot of negativities including allegations that the dolomite sand/pebbles contained silica and would poison people. Sorry, I have a BS in geology/chemistry, another BS in Safety and have worked as an Industrial Hygienist and I’ll say that dolomite sand will not poison anyone unless you swallow spoonsful of it. Sure, it has silica and so does every other beach, but it never becomes air-borne and is never an issue.
I appreciate the project and hope to see the sunset there one day. The Philippine archipelago is a paradise, but when the beach was covered with tons and tons of garbage—well, it deserves better and the reclamation of Manila Bay is a real step in that direction. To me it’s a huge mark of pride.
How it looks now:
